Reading: Notes on a centennial

Detail of Boulevard du Temple by Louis-Jacques Mandé Daguerre (1787 - 1851)

This reading was very interesting to me. I have never really been informed or researched about the history of photography. I included a photograph by Daguerre because he is the inventor of photography. In 1838 he took the first photograph. There are a few inventions that are immediately and widely adopted but photography was. I also learned that in the year 1861 color was invented in photography.
The sentence that most stood out to me was , "Everyone who has a half-dollar can now own a camera; everyone who can point a finger can take a picture". It is so amazing how much the world of photography has changed and developed. Cameras are so expensive now and it is very hard to afford a nice camera. Everyone that can point a finger can take a picture but that does not mean it is going to be a good photograph.
You need to have technique and experience to be a photographer.

Criticizing Photographs: Chapter 1

Terry Barrett
Criticizing photographs by Terry Barrett was very informational and talked about a lot of aspects of criticism that I never even thought about. I feel like this chapter was very repetitive but there were many sections that really stood out to me. I learned the most from the "kinds of criticism" section. I didn't know there were so many types of criticism and its interesting to see how they differ. The most interesting section that I really enjoyed reading was "relations between critics and artists". I think that it would be very hard to have a relationship with a critic. I think they should keep their distance so they don't have a bias. This way it would be easier for them to be completely honest and say how they really feel.
The quote that really stood out to me throughout this whole chapter was about how the relationship between the artist and critic should be. Jerry Saltz states, "There ought to be an uneasy alliance between artists and critics. You should not want to 'love' your critic. For the critic this means not being 'loved' by everyone. But a critic shouldn't want love. He or she wants respect".
This reading was very interesting and informing and I can't wait to learn more!

Some of my final project from darkroom photography!

I took these photographs last semester for my final project. My final project was suppose to portray innocence in young children. The first and last one are of my 9 year old sister and the two in the middle are of my 2 year old sister.
I had so much fun in the darkroom and I'm excited to explore digital photography. I just bought a D3000 Nikon camera and I can't wait to start using it:)

Why Do I Photograph?

Why Do I photograph? I love capturing a moment, facial expression, or anything that can be forgotten easily. I have always had a passion for photography. I love being able to look back on awesome memories. I also feel like taking photographs allows me to be creative. I am usually a shy person but I really can be myself and open up when being a photographer. I feel like my photographs can speak for me.
